Photo of the Month

The Photo of the Month contest is part of our Monthly Meetings and is designed to help members learn and grow through shared experience. Comparing images around a common theme provides insight into different creative choices and techniques, while encouraging thoughtful discussion and feedback.

A Board member will be present at the display to answer questions and encourage participation.

All images entered into the POTM Competition must have been taken during the last 12 months.

You can enter up to two of the three Themes.

New Photo of the Month (POTM) Format for 2026

Starting in 2026, we are updating the Photo of the Month (POTM) competition to make it more educational, engaging, and closely aligned with Brentwood Photography Group activities.

Each month will continue to feature three themes, with the following structure:

Theme 1 – Technique & Creative Focus
This theme will introduce a specific photography technique or subject area. The goal is to help photographers at all levels learn, experiment, and grow their skills. A short video example will be provided each month explaining the technique and offering practical guidance.

Theme 2 – BPG Outings
Images submitted for this theme must be taken during the previous 12 months at an official BPG Outing.
This theme is designed to encourage greater participation in our outings and highlight the excellent photography created during these group events.

Theme 3 – Open
This theme remains unchanged. Members may submit any image taken within the last 12 months, regardless of subject or location.

This updated format keeps the flexibility members value, while adding stronger opportunities for learning, creativity, and community involvement throughout the year.

Rules and Information

  1. You must be a member in good standing to enter.
  2. Each image must have been made in the prior 12 months.
  3. There will be 3 categories each month. You may enter up to 2 images, but not in the same category.
  4. Voting will determine a first and second place in each category.
  5. Winners are announced at the close of the meeting.
  6. Images printed to a maximum 8.5″ x 11″ size.
    • DO NOT MOUNT OR FRAME YOUR IMAGE.
    • Images identified on the reverse side with your name.
  7. At the meeting:
    • A provided self-adhesive number is to be affixed to a front corner.
    • Voting will be by number and not by the name of the photographer.

Rest Period for Winners

A tally will be kept for first place POTM winners. After winning 3 times, you will be asked to “rest” from competition for 1 month. The “rest” period will begin the month after achieving the 3rd win. The purpose of the “rest” is to allow as many members as possible to win.

Instructions for Photo of the Month Winners

Sizing and Submitting Images

  • Resize your image to 2000 pixels along the longest edge (see Image Sizing Instructions for help with resizing)
  • Down-sample your image so it is less than 1MB
  • Save image as a .jpg format
  • Use the Submission Form below to upload your image and include the requested information
